Communicating with your implanted heart device
The Reader uses a short range wireless system that communicates with your implanted heart device. When you plan to use the reader to communicate with your implanted heart device, find a location where you can sit comfortably and are at rest.
- Choose a location that has an adequate cellular or Wi-Fi network signal. A secure Wi-Fi network is recommended.
- Hold the smart phone or tablet in a location where you can sit comfortably and still see the screen. You can hold the smart phone or tablet in your hand or place it on a table or counter top. The smart phone or tablet and reader should be less than 1 meter (less than 3 feet) apart.
- Do not place your smart phone or tablet directly over your implanted heart device. Read the patient manual for your implanted heart device to determine the distance to keep your smart phone or tablet away from your implanted heart device.
- Do not place the reader where it can get wet.
To communicate with your implanted heart device, complete these steps:
- Open the app from your smart phone or tablet.
- Tap the Start button in the app and follow the prompts.
- Press the standby button to turn on the reader.
- Hold the reader over your implanted heart device. You can hold the reader either snugly against your clothing or your bare skin (less than 5 centimeters [2 inches]).
Note |
The reader can get warm to the touch when it is used repeatedly for 20 minutes or more. If you use the reader repeatedly for 20 minutes or more, allow it to cool for 10 minutes before you use it again. Waiting for 10 minutes keeps the reader from getting too warm and making you uncomfortable. |
- View the app to see if the reader is communicating with your implanted heart device. The green indicator light on the reader is turned on when the reader is communicating with your implanted heart device.

- Watch the app to follow the status of the communication between your implanted heart device and the reader. The app indicates when the communication between your implanted heart device and the reader is complete.
- Move the reader away from its position over your implanted heart device.
- View the app to follow the status of the data transmission from the app to the Medtronic CareLink Network.
- Remove the batteries from the reader. Follow the instructions in the Storing the Reader section below.
